Balsam Bashing Event
Hogsmill River
Wednesday 9th and/or Thursday 10th July 2014

A message from the Wandle Trust for their big balsam bash next week - The aim of the work is to start to deal with the source af all the balsam on the hogsmill - KU biodiversity will be there for some of the day, if you are free, please come along.

Hello Everyone!

On Wednesday 9th July and/or Thursday 10th July 2014, there is going to be a 'Balsam Bashing' event(s) on the Hogsmill river.  The event(s) will take place between 11am and 3pm.

If you'd like to join us, please could you let me know by return whether you can come along on 9th or 10th (or both!).  We'd love to have you come along and help out.

Please meet us on the A240 Kingston Road where it goes over the Hogsmill, approximately here:

If you are coming by car, could I suggest you park in side roads.   If you are coming by train it is 0.4 miles from Tolworth station.

Himalayan balsam is an invasive, non native plant species and its prolific growth, particularly along the Hogsmill, is hindering improvements.  Balsam is very easy to remove - it's just pulled up - as its roots are very short.  You can read more about it here:

We will be supplying all the equipment needed - chest waders, gloves, tools etc. Please bring a picnic lunch and we will provide something to drink and sunscreen.

All you need to do is to wear old clothes you don't mind getting dirty, long sleeves, and trousers (because of all the stinging nettles) and, given the sudden burst of sunshine, a hat.  No flip flops or sandals please, Wellington boots, or walking/working type boots offer the best foot protection.

The event will begin with information about what's happening during the day followed by a health and safety briefing.

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I very much look forward to seeing you then.

Best wishes

Erica
